29η Μαϊου, 2:30 το μεσημέρι: Η χιλιόχρονη βυζαντινή αυτοκρατορία είχε καταλυθεί. Καμιάς πολιτείας η πτώση δεν θρηνήθηκε τόσο πολύ όσο της Πόλης του Ελληνισμού, επειδή ως το 1453 είχε παραμείνει το αδούλωτο προπύργιο του Βυζαντινού κράτους. Η αντίσταση των πολιορκουμένων μπροστά στους πολυάριθμους άπιστους για την πατρίδα και τη θρησκεία, έμεινε χαραγμένη στον υπόδουλο Ελληνισμό και δημιούργησε την εθνική συνείδηση στους 4 αιώνες σκλαβιάς. Οι Ελληνες μόλις διέτρεξε η φήμη πως έπεσε η Πόλη, άλλοι άρχισαν να τρέχουν προς το λιμάνι στα πλοία των Βενετσιάνων και των Γενοβέζων και καθώς ορμούσαν πολλοί πάνω στα πλοία βιαστικά και με ακαταστασία χάνονταν, γιατί βούλιαζαν τα πλοία. Και έγινε εκείνο που συνήθως γίνεται σε τέτοιες καταστάσεις. Με θόρυβο, φωνές και χωρίς καμιά τάξη έτρεχαν να σωθεί ο καθένας μέσα σε σύγχυση.Ένα μεγάλο πλήθος άνδρες και γυναίκες, που όλο και μεγάλωνε από τους κυνηγημένους, στράφηκε προς τον πιο μεγάλο ναό της Πόλης, που ονομάζεται Αγια Σοφιά. Μαζεύτηκαν εδώ άνδρες, γυναίκες και παιδιά. Σε λίγο όμως πιάστηκαν από τους Τούρκους χωρίς αντίσταση. Πολλοί άνδρες σκοτώθηκαν μέσα στο ναό από τους Τούρκους. Αλλοι πάλι σ’ άλλα μέρη της Πόλης πήραν τους δρόμους χωρίς να ξέρουν για που. Σε λίγο άλλοι σκοτώθηκαν, άλλοι πιάστηκαν και πολλοί όμως από τους Ελληνες φάνηκαν γενναίοι αντιστάθηκαν και σκοτώθηκαν, για να μη δουν τις γυναίκες και τα παιδιά τους σκλάβους.

Η Ορθόδοξη Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορία έπαψε πια να υφίσταται και στη θέση της ιδρύθηκε και αναπτύχθηκε η Μωαμεθανική Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία, της οποίας η πρωτεύουσα μεταφέρθηκε από την Αδριανούπολη στην Κωνσταντινούπολη που ονομάστηκε από τους Τούρκους Ισταμπούλ (από τη φράση εις την πόλιν) και παρέμεινε έδρα του κράτους ως την οριστική κατάλυσή του το 1922.Το 1456 ο Μωάμεθ Β’ απέσπασε από τους Φράγκους την Αθήνα και λίγο αργότερα υπέταξε όλες τις ελληνικές περιοχές, όπως και την Πελοπόννησο. Ο Παρθενώνας, που τότε ήταν εκκλησία της Θεοτόκου, μετατράπηκε με διαταγή του ίδιου σε τζαμί. Το 1461, η Αυτοκρατορία της Τραπεζούντας περιήλθε στην εξουσία των Οθωμανών. Την ίδια χρονιά καταλήγθηκαν και τα τελευταία υπολλείμματα του Δεσποτάτου της Ηπείρου. Η πτώση της Κωνσταντινούπολης σηματοδότησε την έναρξη της Τουρκοκρατίας στην Ελλάδα."

]]> Sat, 29 May 2010 00:00:00 -0400 741 ODYSSEY of SPEED - Speedsailingevent on Karpathos The island of Karpathos (Greece) will host the second edition of the “Odyssey of Speed” event between 1st of June and 3rd of August. After the first ODYSSEY of SPEED event last year, the organizer continues with the format. Over a three month period, everybody has the opportunity to set his own record.

The island of Karpathos is famous for its steady and strong wind conditions in summer and also well known from past World Cup events and championships in Speedsurfing.

The organizer Tim Otte: “Rather than focussing on maximum speed only, the Odyssey of Speed is dealing with various disciplines of speed/slalom surfing. By this way we would like to motivate also the ‘normal’ Greek Summer windsurfers to get involved, who might be reluctant to compete on pure and specialized speed events and/or who might not have the highly specialized equipment. This year we will also have a dedicated ranking for those competitors, which are competing with non-speed equipment. The philosophy of this challenge is to bring together people from around the world, which enjoy the same passion of windsurfing in strong winds at high speeds. Therefore the participation is open for everyone in the windsurfing community from all skill levels from fun sailors up to serious including professional level.”

Despite the challenges that holding the Presidency presents, Cyprus aspires to rise to the expectations that the role entails and also to influence and assist substantially in furthering EU ideals and enhancing the profile of the Union internationally. Cyprus is strongly committed to acting fairly and to ensuring outcomes that conform to the spirit of cooperation in which the EU was conceived.

Substantial work is under way to prepare Cyprus for the EU Presidency. The preliminary website of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU is part of the preparatory activities taking place and it aims at providing information for what is currently being planned and implemented in preparation for the Presidency.
